Indigenous Vs. Western therapy

Just to put you in the picture, as to the content of my post, I’ve posted the info on what happened in Rwanda Africa after the genocide around 1994...let’s continue…

The Rwandan genocide, also known as the genocide against the Tutsi, was a genocidal mass slaughter of Tutsi in Rwanda by members of the Hutu majority government. An estimated 500,000–1,000,000 Rwandans were killed during the 100-day period from April 7 to mid-July 1994, constituting as many as 70% of the Tutsi population. Additionally, 30% of the Pygmy Batwa were killed. The genocide and widespread slaughter of Rwandans ended when the Tutsi-backed and heavily armed Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) led by Paul Kagame took control of the country. An estimated 2,000,000 Rwandans, mostly Hutus, were displaced and became refugees.

As you can easily work out, after reading this article, millions of the Tutsi people, as well as the Hutus were unbelievably traumatised due to the horror visited upon them. – FYI there are 2 tribal cultures in Uganda. They are all called Rwandans, but split into 2 different tribes.  Tutsis and the Hutus.

Then, there exist the Pygmy Batwa people who are very small in size, also tribal and the friendliest most wonderful people you could hope to meet. Ok, on with the story..

In war, nobody wins, as this clearly points out.

Even Children were forced to kill their own parents!

Instead of stepping in and help STOP the slaughter, the selfish Westerners (won’t say which Country, but since it’s an ego thing, work it out)  decided that, using only Western Standards, to go in after the fact and offer their kind of therapy to these poor displaced traumastised people.  How fucking kind….

At first, the Rwandans thought that the ‘West’ was actually coming in to ‘help’ them! like protecting them, instead they had to try get their heads around Westerners ‘therapy’.

(oh, the West only entered the Country after some 2 million people had been massacred – when it was over….)

They watched in confusion, as the Western therapists took each victim who’d survived, one by one, each alone, whether Child, Mother or Father, and sat them down in a room to ‘talk’ about how they felt, to basically relive the horror, and then given Western coping skills which there is no way in hell that they would ever even slightly understand. Not due to stupidity, but due to the utter stupidity of Western type therapy!

‘Why would we want to go into a cold room, alone with a stranger, and then have to ‘talk’ about the trauma we’ve suffered?’ They wondered and asked.

They then noticed something quite weird. The kids who were being ‘therapised’ by the therapists, were just getting more traumatised! Try as they might, they could not understand this odd way of dealing with pain and trauma. So, the Rwandans finally asked the therapists to leave!

They then took it upon themselves to heal the people. Their families, their friends and anyone who was traumatised, who’d survived the horror they’d suffered.

The African way of dealing with a person who has suffered trauma, for any reason whatsoever, is to bring that person, or people in a group, and lie them on the floor on a warm blanket. They then go about their day, cooking, chatting, laughing etc, but ALWAYS touching and hugging,  feeding, bathing, dressing as well as taking to the toilet, the traumatised one/s. They never ever leave the victim alone. Not only that, but they remain circled around the victim, while they work, but working in a circle to ensure a feeling of absolute safety at all times, for the one/s who are affected.

At no time, does anyone ask them to ‘talk about their feelings’…or crap like that. They are allowed, in a healthy way, supported totally with complete love and acceptance, and never asked or expected to do a thing like clean or whatever, to begin their healing process simply by being in the middle of a group of loving, happy people, who pay them constant attention, yet giving them the space to process whatever transpired themselves.

If the victim cries, he or she is held and rocked to and fro, and sung to,  until he or she feels better. Then they are given something to drink, like a cup of tea, or perhaps a calming herb tea, and when calm, left to lie on the warm blanket again, still surrounded with love and loving people who pose no threat.

They are treated with respect, and not expected to tell the whole group of their horrific ordeals. In fact, talking about their horrific ordeals, is not really encouraged, unless a particular person wants someone to talk to. In which case, it would be one of the elders of the tribe….(not a therapist of any kind), and they’d be heard by a wise older person, whose only job, is to listen and understand. They don’t give unasked for advice, but rather, the community seem to absorb the sufferers pain themselves.

Their way is to ‘love’ the pain better, and support the ones who are suffering.  However long that takes.

( The same as these Indigenous people offer and feel ) –

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are very supportive of each other and, when a loss occurs in a community, the grief experienced is often felt by many people and can have a crushing impact on the health and the stability of the communities involved.

Why do I post this story?

Because, there are millions of mentally ill people all over the World, due to War, Famine, Abuse, Neglect, Trauma, Rape, Torture and every other despicable act humans visit upon humans.  I believe that ‘therapy’ ( a Western Culture and Belief) is a totally useless tool, and cannot help anyone who has suffered any trauma. The thing is, by going to therapy, and rehashing your shit over and over again, you will definitely STAY in that horrific place.

Perhaps, we should offer love and acceptance to anyone we know who is suffering, and or/ is mentally ill, no matter why.

Perhaps we should shut up, and just listen, when the one in pain pours his or her heart out.

Perhaps we should show compassion to those who are traumatised, hence mentally ill, and not single them out as ‘being babies’, or ‘not man enough’….

Perhaps we should stop judging one another…

Perhaps Westerners should learn from all Indigenous people around the World, who absolutely know the right way to live and to heal, instead of spouting their mouths off, full of ego, desperate to ‘fix’ the sufferer to score brownie points, which ultimately destroys the sufferer’s Soul.
