The Joker and Harley Quinn are not relationship goals.

This relationship is unhealthy to say the least, aside from the recent movie The Suicide Squad, the Joker typically shows little to no regard for Harley Quinn’s life. Let’s talk about Harley or Harleen Quinzel as her backstory calls her. She was  introduced in 1992 as the Joker’s sidekick in Batman: The Animated Series. She was only supposed to appear in the one episode called “Joker’s Favor” popping out of a cake. Then in 1994, she got a backstory in the comic “Mad Love”.

She is a psychiatrist named Harleen Quinzel who falls in love with her  patient (The Joker). Since then there have been many spin-off versions of their story. The common thread seems to be violence and insanity. He gaslights her during his fist therapy sessions, is physically abusive to her in various ways (pushing her, chaining her up, and basically smacking her around) and even throws her into a vat of chemicals. The Joker does have some kind of love for her, but more as a possession rather than a spouse (he skins a strip club owner alive for looking at her too long).

This relationship is not “goals” as people are saying. And now we have young people idealizing this clearly toxic relationship. Harley is always hypersexualized and the Joker is chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is the most dangerous of the moral alignment because it represents the destruction not only of beauty and life but also of the order on which beauty and life depend. This is not someone you want to love. This is not a relationship you want to mimic. It’s a cautionary tale and also god damn fiction.

So stop it dummies.
